Susan Abner recognized for volunteerism

First Service Bank’s Susan Abner’s admiration and respect for veterans runs deep. With relatives who served in the military, she knows firsthand the commitment and sacrifice made by those willing to wear the uniform.

It was no surprise that she jumped at the chance to participate in the bank’s Operation Red, White and Brave (ORWB) program and help build a home for a Central Arkansas veteran.

“Operation Red, White and Brave was designed to support the bank’s vision as well as one of our core values – patriotism,” said Robin Hackett, chief operations officer/chief mortgage officer at First Service. “We believe America is the greatest country on earth and we value the freedom that has been won for us. What better way to honor our patriots than to build a new, safe and secure home for a veteran?”

Susan’s efforts earned her Volunteer of the Year recognition from the bank. “We love Susan’s passion and commitment to others,” Robin said. “Susan has helped lead the charge as we work to complete this first of many homes and many volunteer hours for Operation Red, White and Brave. Susan helps make us #firstservicestrong!”

Susan and other employees wanted to show their patriotism and help veterans while working with Habitat for Humanity to build the home. “When the ORWB project became a reality, I was so excited that I volunteered immediately for the first day available, with the caveat of also filling in on any future days when volunteers were needed,” said Susan. “Our group raised the walls on the foundation in record time that day. When there was a lag in raising the walls, I would go around the property to gather trash, wood pieces, etc. If anyone needed help in other areas, I would help as best I could.”

The ORWB project was important to Susan because she recognizes that veterans have kept the U.S. a free country. Her husband, brother, grandfather and uncles served in the military and she is very proud of them and all veterans.

“Many have given their lives; and many others came home to nothing. How sad is that? As a country, we should be proud of, honor, respect and help all veterans no matter their race, creed, social standing, sex or national origin.”

Susan points out ways to remember and honor veterans for their service:

Thank them for serving in the miliary.

Donate to a charity that works with veterans.

Ask a veteran if he or she needs assistance and try to help in any way possible.

Susan, who has worked for First Service for nine years, serves as a deposit operations specialist in the bank’s corporate headquarters. She enjoys most the camaraderie among her co-workers. “Not only is First Service Bank one team, but my department is family. We appreciate, respect and help each other at any given time,” she said. “First Service employees care for all of our customers with integrity, community spirit, patriotism and superior service by separating ourselves from the masses! First Service Strong!”
